Texas casino plans clears hurdle

AUSTIN, Texas – As reported by the El Paso Times: "El Paso's Tigua Indians moved one step closer to resuming gaming at their Speaking Rock Casino on Tuesday.

"The House Committee on Criminal Jurisprudence voted 6-1 to adopt a bill that would allow federally recognized Indian tribes to conduct gambling on tribal lands. The bill, sponsored by state Rep. Norma Chávez, D-El Paso, would also contribute 5 percent of gaming revenue to a college grant program. State Rep. Paul Moreno, D-El Paso, is also on the committee.

"…Speaking Rock Casino was forced to close by then-Attorney General John Cornyn in 2002, and the Tiguas later lost millions paying disgraced Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff and his associates to lobby Congress to reinstate their gambling rights.

"Chávez told the committee that reinstating gambling would allow the Tiguas to sustain themselves and would promote economic development in El Paso…"
