Texas casino bill shelved

AUSTIN, Texas – As reported by the Star Telegram: "Legislation that would have allowed Texas' three federally recognized Indian tribes to operate legal gambling casinos on their lands was shelved Wednesday in the Texas House when a gaming foe pointed out a technical error in the bill.

"House Bill 10 by El Paso Democrat Norma Chavez will likely remain off the House's agenda until next week. Chavez said she is pushing for the measure to assist the tribes' economic development efforts.

"But Pasadena Republican Robert Talton forced the postponement when he raised what lawmakers call a 'point of order,' meaning that all of the rules governing how legislation is brought up for debate were not followed. Chavez said she'll fix the technical errors found by Talton and try again later…"
