Texas Authorities Target Illegal Gambling Customers12 January 2006TEXAS – As reported by the Brownsville Herald: "Customers and landlords of illegal gambling establishments will be the next targets of a renewed campaign against the unlawful and lucrative businesses, Cameron County District Attorney Armando Villalobos said Wednesday. "Officials estimate at least 35 video gambling casinos are in operation throughout the county. "Brownsville police and other local law enforcement agencies have raided more than a dozen illegal video gambling casinos and poker dens in the past two years, according to Herald archives. "Under state law, it is illegal for video gambling machines to pay out cash or prizes worth more than 10 times the value of a bid. "Authorities have prosecuted only the owners and employees of the gambling dens during those raids, but Villalobos said that will change. Now, he plans to go after the casino customers as part of a new strategy to curb the illegal activity. "…Villalobos said ignorance will not be an excuse in upcoming raids. The change is designed to disrupt the supply and demand for the illegal activity…" |
