Tennis Ace Surprised at Gambling Rumors16 October 2003DENMARK – As reported by the Copenhagen Post: "Denmark's leading pro tennis name, Kenneth Carlsen, has found suggestions of widespread gambling activity in the sport hard to believe "Illegal gambling activities were a hot topic as this week's pro tennis Masters Tournament got underway in Madrid. "…The international tennis federation, ATP, is investigating allegations that several pro tennis players may have thrown their own matches in exchange for huge betting sums. "`I've never heard anything about it, and I don't believe it actually goes on. It would be completely stupid,' said Kenneth Carlsen. "According to ATP internal regulations, any player caught engaging in gambling is punished with a three-year suspension and a fine of at least DKK 700,000 (US$109,488)…" |
