Tennessee Problem Gambling Bill Filed

NASHVILLE, Tennessee – As reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel: "State lottery players would see warnings about gambling addiction and be provided with the phone number of Gamblers Anonymous under bills filed at the state Legislature.

"…One would require signs to be posted in lottery outlets that say, 'Warning: Gambling, including playing the lottery, can be addictive.' The other would require that the toll-free number of Gamblers Anonymous be printed on lottery tickets, which now include the words "Play responsibly" on the back.

"Tennessee's lottery begins at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday with the sale of scratch-off tickets.

"…The gambling addiction bills are among several measures dealing with some aspect of the lottery that the Legislature will face this session.

"…Other bills filed last week during the first days of the 2004 legislative session include:

"- A bill by Bryson and Rep. Chris Newton, R-Cleveland, aimed at making meetings of the lottery board and its records more open to the public.

"…-Proposals that would let home school graduates obtain lottery scholarships on the same basis as graduates of regular high schools.

"…- A proposal to increase the percentage of lottery proceeds that go into prize money…"
