Tennessee Lottery Players Line Up20 January 2004TENNESSEE – As reported by the Tennessean: "It was the moment they had all been waiting for, a chance to pick up a little extra cash or perhaps find a fortune thanks to the brand new Tennessee Lottery. "Lottery scratch-off tickets went on sale at 12:01 a.m. today. Some retailers were ready and waiting for the first participants, particularly the Mapco at 8009 Moores Lane in Brentwood. "…One of the first to buy tickets there was Walter England of Brentwood, who spent $110. He said he came out at midnight ''just for kicks and to help education.' "…The start of sales wasn't smooth everywhere. "Jennie Frank, 24, and her friend Donica Christensen, 24, two Belmont University graduates, waited almost 10 minutes to be the first in line to buy lottery tickets at the Circle K convenience market at 2001 Belmont Blvd. But paper for the lottery machine had not arrived, and the store was unable to sell any tickets. "…Phones at the retailer hot line center were ringing continuously yesterday as businesses and lottery officials prepared for lottery launch. "…Most of the calls were from anxious retailers wondering when their scratch-off tickets would arrive, Tennessee Lottery spokeswoman Kym Gerlock said. "…As of yesterday, Gerlock said, lottery preparations had experienced few problems. But the real test comes today as retailers begin selling the tickets and players start claiming winnings…" |
