Tennessee Casino Plan Deemed Illegal

TENNESSEE – As reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel: "State Attorney General Paul Summers has ruled that casino gambling would be illegal at a Vonore resort to be built on land leased to benefit the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.

"State Attorney General Paul Summers has ruled that casino gambling would be illegal at a Vonore resort to be built on land leased to benefit the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians.

"Summers opinion, released Monday, clearly states gambling would not be permitted.

"…The $50 million Sequoyah Lodge and Lake Resort is to be developed by Richard Gehring with Overhill Development Co. of Dunedin, Fla.

"…In the Vonore area, there has been widespread talk that the resort would eventually include casino gambling because of the involvement of the Cherokee tribe. Gambling is present on American Indian land in other states…"
