Temperatures in 40s will usher in 2009

31 December 2008

Las Vegas Sun

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Seasonal temperatures are in store tonight for partygoers welcoming in the new year.

The National Weather Service said temperatures in the Las Vegas Valley will range from the middle to upper 40s at midnight, with lower 40s possible along the western edge of the valley. No precipitation is in the forecast.

The high temperature is expected to reach 60 degrees this afternoon, which is four degrees above average for New Year's Eve, according to weather service records.

Similar conditions are in the forecast Thursday with partly sunny skies and a high near 61. Cooler temperatures and a slight chance of rain are possible beginning Sunday.

Forecasters said the mercury will be about nine degrees warmer this year than last year, when the New Year's high topped out at 51 degrees.

Today likely will be the warmest New Year's Eve since Dec. 31, 2005, when the high hit 66 degrees.
