Teamsters Vote Canceled At The Mirage22 July 2002by Jeff Simpson LAS VEGAS -- MGM Mirage executives said that a union certification election scheduled Friday for loading-dock workers at The Mirage was canceled after Teamsters Local 995 officials withdrew their election petition. Unions usually withdraw from organizing election votes when they anticipate a clear defeat, and Local 995's withdrawal marks the union's second decision in the past week to avoid an election after earlier withdrawing an MGM Grand election request. An election at New York-New York is still pending, but no date has been set, MGM Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman said. Bellagio loading dock workers in May voted to have Local 995 represent them in contract negotiations with the upscale Strip megaresort. The 24-18 vote in favor of Teamsters' representation marked the first time workers at one of the former Wynn Resorts properties voted to affiliate with the 1.4 million-member International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Teamsters Local 995 represents 3,500 hotel-casino workers, including groups of employees at most Park Place Entertainment and Mandalay Resort Group properties in Las Vegas. |
