Tax Threat Fails to Slow Florida Cruise Ships

FLORIDA – As reported by News Press: ``Recent taxation threats from Tallahassee aren't deterring a resurgence in Lee County-based casino cruises.

`` Also called 'cruises to nowhere,' these businesses sail vessels into international waters for the purpose of allowing passengers to gamble for a few hours.

``Day cruises are one of Florida's sturdy tourism draws, with about 17 gambling ships operating out of ports statewide.

``… Final arrangements are being made for the three-level, 165-foot-long Leisure Lady to depart at least once daily from the San Carlos Island dock at 2080 Main St.

``…Meanwhile, in January, a new, 160-foot catamaran, which will shuttle tourists to Key West, will be outfitted with 20 or more slot machines. The shuttle service operates out of Salty Sam's marina at 2500 Main St., San Carlos Island.

``…However, less than two weeks ago, a Gannett News Service story reported state Sen. Skip Campbell, D-Tamarac, warning some day-cruise operators: "We could craft a bill to make it illegal for you guys to operate." Campbell then repeatedly asked what taxes they would pay instead..."
