Tasmanians Gambling More

AUSTRALIA – As reported by Mercury: "Tasmanians gambled more than $2 billion (US$1.4 billion)last financial year with gaming machines leading the way, the Tasmanian Gaming Commission annual report shows.

"The State Government received more than $70 million from taxation and licence fees -- an 8.5 per cent increase from 2001-2002.

"Hotels and clubs showed a massive rise in gambling turnover to more than $1 billion -- more than doubling in five years.

"Casino operations showed a small rise to $926 million with a gaming machine turnover increase making up for a significant drop in table gaming.

"…A separate publication, Australian Gambling Statistics, showed that Tasmanians lost $256 million in 2001-2002…"
