Tasmanian Government to Examine Problem Gambling Report

TASMANIA – As reported by the Mercury: "The State Government will examine the Anglicare report on problem gambling before deciding whether any action is necessary.

"Premier Paul Lennon said yesterday the government respected the views of an important organisation like Anglicare, but he had not had a chance to read the report or examine its recommendations.

"The report on problem gambling among low-income earners, released on Tuesday, estimated there were 3000 problem gamblers in the state affecting between 15,000 and 30,000 people, including 2000 children.

"…Greens Leader Peg Putt said the government should act on the recommendations and take on board the overwhelming request of problem gamblers that poker machines outside casinos be banned or greatly reduced in number…"
