Tasmania Urged to Increase Problem Gambling Funding

TASMANIA, Australia – As reported by the Mercury: "The State Government should increase its allocation from gambling-derived revenue to help prevent gambling problems and alleviate the impact.

"This was one of 24 recommendations made in a report into problem gambling among low-income earners released by Anglicare Tasmania yesterday.

"The report also called for a ban on gambling advertising outside gaming venues and a reduction in the number of poker machines in hotels and clubs when the contract is next negotiated.

"…Of the $271 million spent on gambling by Tasmanians in 2002-03, $112 million was lost on poker machines in hotels and clubs. $88 million in the casinos and $25 million in racing…"
