Taiwanese Illegal Gambling Operations Raided

TAIWAN – As reported by the eTaiwan News: "Taiwan's police raided an Internet company and six gambling dens in a crackdown on rampant illegal betting over the result of the island's presidential elections, officers said yesterday.

"Taiwanese husband and wife team and a computer expert were arrested Tuesday for allegedly operating a Macau-based Web site that was running a book on the closely-contested March 20 poll, police said.

"Officers also raided six addresses in cities around the island as part of the enormous task to try to deter the lucrative betting industry that is largely run by the island's criminal gangs.

"Sources said the illegal betting industry had already written off the chances of President Chen Shui-bian and gamblers were trying to predict the size of the victory for Lien Chan…"
