TAB Slams Betting Exchange Plans

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australian: "TAB has slammed claims by British betting exchange Betfair that it plans to set up a competing exchange in the Australian market.

"Betfair believes the registration by NSW-based TAB of the trademarks 'Tabfair' and 'Tabexchange' - as published in the Australian Official Journal of Trade Marks last month - is evidence that TAB plans to introduce its own betting exchanges.

"TAB has been vehemently opposed to Betfair applying for an Australian licence, arguing that exchanges threaten the viability and integrity of the racing industry and encourage a proliferation of gambling.

"…However, TAB said yesterday the trademarks were applied for last year as a defensive measure in case betting exchanges were allowed to operate, and agencies and bookmakers rushed for a piece of the action…"
