Survey: Most Oppose Iowa Casino Plans

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "More than half the residents who returned a survey seeking opinions about a casino in the city of Waukee opposed the issue.

"City officials received only 270, or 9 percent, of the 3,000 surveys sent out Sept. 3 to residents on its utility bill mailing list. Of those, 150, or 56 percent, said they were against having a casino in the community. One resident was neutral, and 119 were in favor of it. The questionnaire gave residents two options - to say whether they were opposed or to rank how they would like to see casino money spent in the city.

"…Some residents used the request for feedback as an avenue to vent their frustration with City Council members for their decision to exclusively negotiate with a local businessman to bring a casino to the city, and with City Administrator Mark Arentsen for drafting the survey…"
