Survey: Men More Likely to be Problem Gamblers

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australia Age.com: "A gambling survey has cast doubt on whether women are more likely to be problem gamblers, with disproportionately more men in figures and many of them taking drugs and alcohol while they gambled.

"Men made up to 61 per cent of problem gamblers even though they are only 48 per cent of Victoria's population.

"Interchurch Gambling Taskforce chairman John Dalziel said that, from his experience, most of those who came to seek help at the Salvation Army were women.

"…The survey found that of problem gamblers 36 per cent were aged 50 to 64 and 33 per cent were aged 35 to 49.

"…Most did not have a tertiary education, were on social security benefits (but not the aged pension), lived in the metropolitan area and had a family history of gambling.

"Many consumed alcohol and drugs while gambling (41 per cent) and lived with others who might be affected daily by their gambling…"
