Supreme Court Won't Hear Challenge of Tribal Compacts

DETROIT, Michigan -- The U.S. Supreme Court said today it won't hear an anti-casino group's challenge to Michigan compacts that allow four American Indian tribes to open casinos.

The court, without comment, declined to hear an appeal of a Michigan Supreme Court decision. New Buffalo-based Taxpayers of Michigan against Casinos had appealed the decision.

The Michigan Supreme Court ruled last summer that the state Legislature didn't violate Michigan's constitution when it approved four tribal casino compacts by a resolution during a late-night session in 1998. A resolution needs the approval of the majority of lawmakers present.

Taxpayers of Michigan Against Casinos said the compacts should have been approved through a formal bill, which is harder to pass because it requires a majority of all lawmakers.
