Suncoast Strike Continues

SOUTH AFRICA – As reported by the South Africa Daily News: "Suncoast casino has allegedly brought employees from a sister casino to Durban to help out as the strike at the casino entered its third day on Monday.

"Hundreds of workers at the casino went on a legal strike over a wage dispute and the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union, representing them, has accused the casino of bringing in scab workers from the Tsogo Sun in Johannesburg.

"'We understand that they were supposed to obtain licences, in terms of the gaming act, to bring these workers here and they have violated this,' said union regional secretary, Moses Makhanya.

"Makhanya said the strike had been very effective and union members would picket day and night until their demands were met.

"…The strike comes after a scuppered three-month salary negotiation process. The union wants a nine percent wage increase, but Suncoast management is demanding it be lowered to 6.8 percent. The union says management went ahead with the 6.8 percent salary increase while negotiations were still under way…"
