SugarHouse Casino celebrates five-year anniversary

22 September 2015

(PRESS RELEASE) -- In anticipation of its year-end debut of the all-new, bigger, better SugarHouse, the casino celebrates its fifth anniversary this week. Since opening its doors on September 23, 2010, SugarHouse Casino has hosted more than 10 million guests, generating more than $580 million in revenues for the city and the Commonwealth.

A Cause for Celebration

As Philadelphia’s first casino, SugarHouse has brought five years of fun and gaming to the city. It has been recognized by local and national gaming media as one of the area’s and industry’s best entertainment and nightlife destinations. In 2014 Casino Player gave SugarHouse several “Best of Dining and Entertainment” awards, including Best View, Best Outdoor Dining and Best Sports Bar.

“We are delighted with our achievements since opening our doors as Philly’s casino five years ago,” said Wendy Hamilton, general manager of SugarHouse Casino. “Our fifth anniversary is cause for celebration, and it’s an opportunity to thank our Team Members, the Philadelphia community and our guests for all they’ve done to make us successful.”

Topping off its $164 million expansion last month, SugarHouse will unveil a slightly larger gaming floor, several new restaurants, a river-view event center and a new parking garage. The first of the new dining concepts on property was revealed earlier this month as Hugo’s Frog Bar & Chop House, a member of Chicago-based Gibsons Restaurant Group, which will also serve as the exclusive caterer for the casino’s new event center.

A Great Place to Work

Upon completion, the expansion will bring 500 new, full-time jobs to SugarHouse’s current 1,100-member team, which has voted the casino a top place to work in Philly nine separate times since its grand opening in September 2010. Voted by Team Members as a “Best Place to Work” in the Philadelphia Business Journal for five consecutive years and “Top Workplace” from Philly.com for four years in a row, SugarHouse offers an exciting, diverse and inclusive workplace with excellent benefits and extensive opportunities for career growth and advancement.

Strong Economic Engine

Since opening in 2010, SugarHouse has generated $580 million in tax revenues for Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. Moreover, SugarHouse contributes to the greater Delaware Valley economy, fueling job creation outside the casino by supporting expansion construction teams and by supporting vendor partners who supply the casino with goods and services.

A Proud Community Partner

Committed to creating positive impact in its community, SugarHouse has given more than $6 million in donations and community funding to area and neighborhood initiatives. It has contributed $3.6 million to the Penn Treaty Special Services District (PTSSD), a 501 (c)(3) community-based organization that works to enhance the quality of life for residents in the neighborhoods immediately surrounding the casino, including Fishtown, South Kensington, Old Richmond and Northern Liberties. The PTSSD uses casino funds to sponsor community activities, make physical improvements to parks and other infrastructure and to grant funding for local organizations. SugarHouse committed this past July to double its annual payment to the PTSSD from $500,000 to $1 million for 2015.

SugarHouse also leads community service-driven initiatives, including support for the annual Komen Race for the Cure in Philadelphia and its volunteer recognition event, the annual donation of hundreds of Thanksgiving turkeys to the Salvation Army and dozens of groups and organizations across the city, and the donation and shipping of 150 care packages for the USO each July. SugarHouse also works closely with local community job partners – JEVS, Community College of Philadelphia (CCP), Veteran’s Multi Service Center and Good Will of Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania – to bring job opportunities to members of the local community.

Proud to have become part of the fabric of Philadelphia and its neighborhoods during the last five years, SugarHouse is an avid supporter of long-standing Philadelphia traditions, including title sponsorship of the city’s biggest New Year’s traditions—New Year’s Eve fireworks on the Delaware River waterfront and the New Year’s Day Mummers Parade.

Fifth Anniversary Promotions

To celebrate the casino’s fifth anniversary, SugarHouse hosted a Five-Year Anniversary Sweepstakes – giving away more than $200,000 in cash to 500 total winners. On September 20, from 10 a.m.—10 p.m., ten winners were selected every fifteen minutes to win $500. Additionally, twenty winners were selected to win $500 cash at 10 p.m.
