Study to Probe Indigenous Gambling

AUSTRALIA – As reported by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation: "The first detailed study into the effects of commercial gambling on Indigenous communities in northern Australia is about to get under way.

"The study by Charles Darwin University, in collaboration with Northern Territory Treasury, will look at the extent of gambling in Indigenous communities and determine if it is a problem.

"Researcher Dr Martin Young says very little is known, but it appears electronic gambling machines like pokies, may be replacing a lot of card-based gambling.

"…'Gambling in non-Indigenous communities means a very different thing to gambling in Indigenous communities,' he said…"
