Study: Slots Trigger Troubles

NEBRASKA – As reported by the Lincoln Journal Star: "Putting video slot machines in places other than casinos can lead to devastating economic and social consequences for those communities and neighboring towns, according to a new study.

"Released Tuesday by the Lincoln and Lancaster County Joint Budget Committee, the study also says casino gambling should be carefully controlled by the Legislature and by the communities where gambling expansion is proposed.

"…The report is timely:State senators are debating expanded gambling, and a pro-gambling group is gathering petitions to put casinos and video slots on the ballot.

"…The study was done by Julie Poykko-Post, an independent contractor, for Human Services Administration of Lincoln. Boesch said it cost about $3,000 and took three months to complete.

"The study focused on 29 social indicators -the same used in the past two studies -for Lancaster County. Among them: households and families, employment and unemployment, earnings, household income, poverty, bankruptcies, crime, drunk driving, child abuse and neglect, domestic assault and divorce, suicide and gambling treatment."
