Study: Slots Could Help Massachusetts Tracks

MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Boston Herald: "Given a green light to roll out slot machines, Bay State racetracks could recapture $100 million a year now flowing across the border to a pair of Rhode Island gambling establishments, a new study finds.

"Such a move could prove a windfall for struggling Massachusetts dog and horse track owners as well, reports the Center for Policy Analysis at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.

"The state's four racetracks, before taxes, could pull in $300 million if lawmakers approved proposals to allow a total of 4,000 of these Vegas-style betting machines.

"…The Rev. Richard McGowan, a gaming-industry expert and economics professor at Boston College, believes such claims of build-it-and-they-will-come, at least in the case of allowing local racetracks to add slots, may be overblown…"
