Study Shows Industry Hiring Higher Percentage of Minorities

A study prepared for the American Gaming Association says the casino industry employs a higher percentage of minorities than its business counterparts.

The AGA said today that a study using 2002 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission data also showed that casinos employed a higher percentage of black executives, white and black female executives, Hispanics and women than other industries.

The study, prepared by PricewaterhouseCoopers, showed that, overall, minorities comprised 38 percent of participating casinos' non-service workers, compared with 27.5 percent of non-service workers among the national work force.

A study of the overall work force at 138 casinos employing 255,757 workers -- two-thirds of the total casino workforce nationwide -- showed that 52.9 percent were white, 18.3 percent black, 18.3 percent Hispanic, 9.7 percent Asian and Pacific Islanders and 0.8 percent Indian.

The AGA said a similar study was conducted of EEOC data from 121 casinos employing 187,493 people in 2000. Among the overall casino workforce, whites represented 56.1 percent of the workforce, blacks 19 percent, Hispanics 15.4 percent, Asians and Pacific Islanders 8.7 percent and Indians 0.8 percent.
