Study: Racino States Do Better

10 December 2003

TUCSON, Arizona – As reported by the Arizona Republic: "The horse-racing industry generally fares better in states that allow slot machines at racetracks than in neighboring states without so-called 'racinos,' according to early results of a University of Arizona study shared here Tuesday.

"…New Mexico's horseracing industry generally enjoyed more breeding and better races than neighboring states like Arizona, researchers found.

"A new initiative circulating in California could result in slots at tracks there, threatening to surround Arizona on two flanks with states more attractive to breeders, horsemen and others in the industry.

"That could further strain an Arizona racing industry where total horse and dog parimutuel wagers last fiscal year declined 3.2 percent from the previous year and track revenue fell 4 percent.

"…Arizona voters last year rejected a measure to allow slots at tracks while approving another measure to allow expanded Indian gambling. Tracks fear that expanded Indian gambling could hasten their demise."
