Study: Milwaukee Will Suffer from Kenosha Casino9 March 2005MILWAUKEE – As reported by the Milwaukee Business Journal: "Milwaukee will lose 2,000 existing jobs if a proposed Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin casino is built in Kenosha, according to a new study sponsored by local community and business groups -- and a prime competitor to the would-be casino. "The study, presented Tuesday before the Milwaukee Common Council's Community and Economic Development Committee, showed that the economic loss to the Milwaukee area could climb to as high as $1 billion through the loss of jobs, tourism and local government revenue if the casino is built at Dairyland Greyhound Park. "The study was sponsored by the Forest County Potawatomi Community, which operates its own casino in Milwaukee, as well as the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Urban League, Visit Milwaukee, and the Greater Milwaukee Committee. "Its release comes one day after the Kenosha City Council approved an agreement with the Menominee that promises the city millions of dollars annually in exchange for allowing dog track land to be put into tribal trust for development of the casino. Kenosha County Board approval is also expected…" |
