Study: Iowa Casinos to Bring in Money, Jobs

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "A new study financed by business interests predicts six new Iowa casinos would bring in $179 million in new gambling revenue, create 3,400 new jobs, and pay $45 million in taxes.

"The Iowa Association of Business and Industry financed the report by Strategic Economics Group of Des Moines but has taken no position on the expansion.

"…The study found that the current casinos are a $1.6 billion a year industry that has created 18,230 jobs and $840 million in spin-off business. Just over half of the casino business comes from out-of-staters.

"Adding casinos in Northwood, Ottumwa, Waterloo, Emmetsburg, Hampton and Fort Dodge would bring in another $218 million in revenue, but $37 million of that would be shifted from other casinos, the economists said.

"The new casinos, if operated simultaneously, would combine for $276 million in gross revenue and create 3,400 jobs, the study found…"
