Study: Gambling Hurting the Weakest

NOVA SCOTIA – As reported by the Halifax Herald: "Gambling in Nova Scotia is threatening the security of low-income earners, the less educated and seniors and is draining money from charities, a new study shows.

"The findings were released Tuesday at the International Problem Gambling Conference in Halifax.

"Finance Minister Peter Christie, minister responsible for gaming, said the province is looking at how all parts of society are affected by gambling.

"…Unlike in the rest of the country, Nova Scotians who spend the most on gambling are more likely to be from low-income households.

"…Interestingly, gamblers do not appear to be cutting out other personal pleasures, like eating out, to fund their gaming. Instead, they are less likely to make charitable donations.

"…Finally, the authors call for ethical public policy review and renewal in relation to gambling…"
