Study Downplays Casino Impact

MONTREAL – As reported by the CBC News: "A Laval University study says casinos may not have as much of an impact on local neighbourhoods as expected. It says more residents play games of chance when a casino is nearby but the casino itself does not increase the number of local problem gamblers.

"The study may just help a bid by Loto Quebec to build a new casino complex in Montreal's Pointe St. Charles neighbourhood.

"…The Laval University study, which researched the habits of 810 people in the Hull area for five years after a casino opened there, found that a new casino does boost the number of local people playing games of chance, but not the number of problem gamblers…"
