Study: Casinos Could Help Texas

TEXAS – As reported by the Dallas Morning News: " Legalizing full casino gambling in Texas would create more than 270,000 permanent jobs and generate nearly $2.9 billion annually in state and local tax receipts, 'more than enough to eliminate 'Robin Hood,' ' a study being released in Austin today says.

"A companion study on the social costs of gambling says 'there is no significant relationship between casino gambling and crime, bankruptcy, unemployment and suicide.'

"Both studies were paid for by the Texas Enhancement Group, LLC, to stimulate discussion on gambling as a solution for the state's school finance problems, said Arlen Smith, a Lakeway chiropractor and partner in the group.

"The economic study was done by The Perryman Group of Waco. The social impact study was done by William Kelly, a professor of sociology and director of the Center for Criminology and Criminal Justice Research at the University of Texas at Austin and a senior research associate with M. Crane & Associates.

"…Gambling opponents are not swayed by the promises of riches for the state.

"…The Perryman study is based on a proposal by state Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston. It would allow full casino gambling, not just slot machines, at the state's existing horse and dog tracks, at three American Indian sites and at 24 other locations that offered the most aggressive economic development and job creation opportunities…"
