Striking Workers to Use Civil Disobedience

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Philadelphia Inquirer: "Civil disobedience is the next strategy the union representing 10,000 striking casino-hotel workers says it will use tomorrow to get the attention of seven of the city's 12 casinos with which it has failed to reach a contract agreement.

"The strike, which will be one week old tomorrow, is the longest such labor action in the history of gaming in Atlantic City. The union and management failed to reach a contract agreement by the strike deadline last Friday.

"'We want the casinos to understand our union remains united and that our members are serious about wanting to get a contract settled,' said Chris Magoulas, a spokesman for Local 54 Unite Here, which represents about 14,500 casino workers citywide. 'Some are even willing to go to jail to make that point.'

"…The strike, though nonviolent, has become a war of words.

"…Neither side seems ready to back down, and no new negotiation sessions are scheduled.

"…This afternoon, a special training session will cover lessons in the proper way to be arrested, the history of civil disobedience, and exactly what to tell your child about why you are going to jail, Magoulas said…"
