Striking Worker Charges Security Firm with Assault13 October 2004ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey – As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: "A striking casino worker filed a complaint against a private security firm over the weekend, charging he was assaulted while on the picket line. "Alberto Pena, a Local 54 member employed at Bally's Atlantic City, told police Sunday night that three security workers hired by the casino tackled him and broke his kneecap. The busperson said he was handcuffed by security and taken to a room inside Bally's, where he was detained for 30 minutes before he was released. "…Police spokesman Lt. Michael Tullio said Tuesday that Pena filed assault charges and the casino filed a counter complaint of criminal mischief. "The incident reportedly began when a picket objected to security videotaping union members along Pacific Avenue and a video camera was knocked from a security worker's hand. "…Pena told police he was running to tell a strike captain about the camera incident when security started to chase him. He says he was knocked to the ground, resulting in the knee injury. "Pena was treated that night at Atlantic City Medical Center, City Division in Atlantic City, and later released. A copy of the doctor's orders given to Pena states he is being treated for a broken patella. "McDevitt said with so much focus on what pickets might do wrong, he finds it troubling that a casino security firm would resort to violence…" |
