Striking Edmonton casino workers reject offer

EDMONTON, Alberta – As reported by the Edmonton Journal: "Striking workers continued to picket outside the Palace Casino on Saturday after rejecting an offer from the company that included thousands of dollars in signing bonuses.

"In a vote ordered by the Alberta Labour Relations Board at the request of Gateway Casinos Ltd., 58 per cent of the workers represented by the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 401 rejected the proposed contract. The final vote was 99 against and 73 in favour.

"…The strike at the West Edmonton Mall casino has lasted five months, with picketers outside in bitter winter weather over a first union contract. Workers previously belonged to an association.

"In The company asked the labour relations board for the vote after union negotiators refused to take the offer to members…"
