Stratosphere comes down to earth with a bump

27 April 2001

A Harrah's Entertainment Inc. subsidiary filed a lawsuit this week in U.S. District Court against the owners of the Stratosphere hotel-casino alleging patent infringement.

Apparently, the Stratosphere violated a patent, filed in 1996, for the "Bet Guarantee System" invented by Thomas Cook and James LoCicero. The "Bet Guarantee System" enables casinos to track a players wins, losses and the casino's theoretical win as well as producing a ticket that rated customers can redeem for cash, credits or coins.

At this time, Stratosphere officials could not be reached for comment.
