Straban Commission Members Step Down

STRABAN TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Gettysburg Times: "In an expression of solidarity with their former chairman, four members of the five-person Straban Township Planning Commission have removed themselves from any decision-making related to a casino proposed in the township. The recusals were in support of Riley Redding, who had a week earlier retired under pressure indirectly from the casino promoters.

"Chance Enterprises, an investor group led by Gettysburg businessman David LeVan, has proposed a 3,000-slot machine gaming facility, 30,000-square-foot spa and four-star hotel complex to be built in the northeast quadrant of the U.S. 15/30 interchange.

"Chance filed suit June 16 in Adams County Court of Common Pleas claiming two members of the township's zoning hearing board, both of whom had publicly opposed the casino, could not render an impartial decision regarding whether the project should be allowed in the township's Commercial-Highway zone.

"… Noting an accusation by Chance attorney Jeffrey Ernico that Redding had displayed No Casino bumper stickers on his truck, the supervisors told Redding, 'If you have engaged in casino statements or actions ... it would be best for you to not be involved with Chanceís plans.'

"Redding subsequently announced his retirement from the planning commission, thus ending 32 years of service to the township…"
