Still no funding for California compacts

SACRAMENTO, California -- As reported by the Press Enterprise: "After a summer of silence, Gov. Schwarzenegger has started to defend four tribal casino expansion deals he negotiated last year, but he still has not committed to raising money or campaigning for the agreements.

"Schwarzenegger recently signed ballot arguments in favor of each of the four agreements, certified to go before voters in the Feb. 5 election. Last week, his office filed court papers siding with a Riverside County tribe's lawsuit contending that tribal gambling deals with the state, known as compacts, are exempt from the referendum process.

"The moves are the first concrete signs that he intends to defend the agreements, following months in which his office did little publicly to counter a well-financed drive by deal opponents to gather signatures to qualify for a referendum..."
