Still no deal for Florida tribe

TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- As reported by the Miami Herald: "The federal deadline for Florida to reach a gambling compact with the Seminole Tribe will come and go today without a deal.

"Both the governor's office and the Seminoles say they're making progress on talks on whether to allow the tribe higher-stakes games on their seven reservations, but it's too early to say whether a final deal is close.

"One thing is clear: The 60-day deadline imposed by U.S. Department of Interior Dick Kempthorne on June 22 is more of a target than a drop-dead date.

"George Skibine, director of the federal Office of Indian Gaming in the U.S. Interior Department, said Monday he expects a progress report but it could be two weeks before the meeting takes place.

"...Sources close to the talks say that negotiators for Gov. Charlie Crist want to give the tribe Las Vegas-style slot machines and the exclusive right to some Class III games, such as blackjack and baccarat, but several issues remain unresolved..."
