Stellar Year for Delaware Park

22 November 2005

DELAWARE -- (PRESS RELEASE) -- November 13th brought yet another live racing meet to a close at Delaware Park. The 2005 season ended with a combined handle of $235,279,675. This figure reflects a 5.32% decrease from 2004. The live on-track handle increased 1.84%, while the simulcast-out handle decreased 5.89%. A contributing factor to the overall wagering decline was the East Coast strangles outbreak, hindering transport and competition of many racehorses. Consequently, many races ran with short fields or did not fill at all.

Despite the low final handle, Delaware Park enjoyed many successes this year. Among them was the claim to Preakness and Belmont winner Afleet Alex. Alex began his career at Delaware Park and calls the historic racetrack home. Stated Chief Operating Officer Bill Fasy, "Alex and his team gave us a truly spectacular year. We are extremely proud of his extraordinary achievements."

2005 brought many facility improvements and capital projects, as well. Among them was the continuation of the stable area renovations and expansion, structural repairs, the beginning of Grandstand seating replacement, and racetrack improvements. "Delaware Park is an icon; we are committed to continued comfort and beauty for our racing fans' enjoyment."

Delaware Park is located minutes south of Wilmington and the Delaware Memorial Bridge and just north of the Maryland state line on I-95 at exit 4B. Delaware Park offers live thoroughbred racing April through October and year-round simulcasting from the around the globe.
