Steelworkers Support Casino Strike

INDIANA – As reported by the Northwest Indiana Post-Tribune: "As hospitality workers at three additional casino boats voted in favor of a strike option Wednesday, they had the comfort of knowing the powerful Steelworkers union would stand by them.

"Members of the United Steelworkers of America have pledged to boycott the casinos if the workers walk off the job.

"On Wednesday, hospitality workers at Harrah's, Majestic Star, Trump and the Buffington Harbor Pavilion voted 423-33 to authorize a strike.

"On Monday, Blue Chip Casino workers voted 140-17 to authorize a strike. There were 240 union members eligible to take part in that vote.

"…Tom Hargrove, president of USWA Local 1010, said members are signing cards pledging to boycott the casinos if workers go on strike.

"…Low wages and the lack of affordable health insurance are the primary concerns of the casino workers…"
