St. Paul Pushes for Casino26 January 2005ST. PAUL, Minnesota – As reported by the St. Paul Pioneer Press: "St. Paul may be about to roll the dice on a downtown casino, hoping to cash in on momentum at the state Capitol to expand gambling in Minnesota. "City Hall officials acknowledged Monday that they've been discussing the potential for options including riverboat gambling, a casino on the Cleveland Circle site across from the Xcel Energy Center, and possibly even a replacement for the Radisson Riverfront Hotel. "…The request for proposals, dated Dec. 8, calls for a new hotel within a block of RiverCentre -- presumably a replacement for the Radisson Riverfront on Kellogg Boulevard -- or for the reconstruction of the existing hotel. The property, as well as the downtown Radisson City Center Hotel at 411 Minnesota St., is actually owned by the St. Paul Port Authority and managed by Radisson. "Mayor Randy Kelly has flirted with the idea of a casino before, meeting with representatives of northern Minnesota's White Earth and Red Lake Indian bands about 13 months ago, during the peak of the state's ongoing budget crisis. "…Also, the expansion of gambling in Minnesota is by no means certain. The Indian bands that run the metro area's premier casinos, in Prior Lake and Red Wing, have staunchly opposed any expansion of gaming -- not just in the Twin Cities but across the region.
