St Paul Gambling Case Goes to Jury Today

ST PAUL, Minnesota – As reported by the Pioneer Press: ``Jurors in the federal court trial of two St. Paul bar owners accused of taking part in an illegal sports gambling and money-laundering conspiracy will get the case this morning.

``Attorneys wrapped up their closing arguments Monday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis with prosecutors accusing Walter Awada of cashing $60,000 in checks for an admitted bookie and Gary Erickson of cashing $20,000.

``…Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Koch showed jurors checks from an Edina man who lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in bets, cashed by the known bookie at Awada's and Erickson's bars.

```Everyone knew he was a bookie,' Koch said.

``U.S. District Judge James Rosenbaum will instruct the jurors on the charges beginning at 9:30 a.m. today, after which deliberations will begin…"
