St. Mary Casino Boat May Open in Nov. '0618 July 2006ST MARY PARISH, Louisiana -- As reported by the Advocate: "St. Mary Parish President Paul Naquin said Monday that the riverboat casino that was once the Belle of Orleans could be operating by early November following Saturday's parish vote in favor of the move. "In the election, 65 percent of the voters who turned out voted in favor of allowing the riverboat to set up shop in Bayou Boeuf, near Amelia on the far eastern end of the parish. "The boat itself is in Alabama, undergoing repairs from damage suffered during Hurricane Katrina. "The Louisiana Gaming Control Board has already approved the shift of berth from New Orleans to St. Mary Parish, pending the approval of St. Mary Parish voters. "While the gambling board has given its approval, the Orleans Levee District, which had been leasing space to the Belle of Orleans, has fought the move, claiming the riverboat operators are bailing out on a lease..." |
