Sparks City Struggles with Casino Proposal

SPARKS CITY, Nevada – As reported by the The Sparks City Council struggled Monday with requests from license holders who want to build the first casinos in Spanish Springs.

"Councilman John Mayer said he was unwilling to proceed with planning until financial, traffic and other impacts associated with gaming were known.

"…Representatives for Spanish Springs Town Centre, Sparks Galleria, Tierra del Sol and Kiley Ranch North want to include unrestricted gaming in their developments east of Pyramid Highway.

"Six license holders, including the Club Cal Neva Hotel and Peppermill Hotel-Casino, also want to build casinos in Spanish Springs.

"Developers want zoning changes to allow gaming in Spanish Springs similar to the Tamarack Junction in southwest Reno. City officials have said gaming could achieve economic balance and higher property tax revenues.

"…But John Ascuaga's Nugget spokesman Roger Trounday said allowing unrestricted licenses, which are exempt from state law requiring new casinos to have at least 200 hotel rooms, could erode the profits of larger hotel-casinos that contribute to room tax revenues…"
