South Korean Government Accused in Gambling Scandal

SOUTH KOREA – As reported by the Korea Times: "The nation's largest opposition Grand National Party (GNP) on Monday suggested that a number of governing camp leaders have been involved in a video gambling scandal.

"A GNP leader even declared that the on-going extraordinary session of the National Assembly will be the final legislative procedure to take place under the Roh Moo-hyun administration.

"The conservative party's full-scale offensive came a day after Chong Wa Dae denied allegations that one of the president's nephews improperly used his influence to promote the sales of the video slot machine game `Pada Iyagi,' or ``Sea Story.'

"…Without revealing names, GNP lawmakers, including Rep. Joo Sung-young, said a number of `powerful men' in the governing camp have influenced the government's selection process of gift certificate issuers in return for kickbacks.

"The video jackpot game winners receive gift certificates, which can be exchanged for real money outside the game halls…"
