South Korea President's Son Probed in Lottery Scandal

SEOUL, South Korea – As reported by the Associated Press: "Prosecutors will summon President Kim Dae-jung's youngest son, who has been linked to a bribery scandal, for questioning once he appoints a lawyer, a state prosecutor said Monday.

"Local reports said last week that prosecutors wanted to summon Kim Hong-gul, who lives in Los Angeles, to investigate whether he received $230,000 in bribes last year.

"…Early this month, President Kim apologized to the nation for the suspected involvement of two of his sons in financial wrongdoing. The government's popularity has also suffered because of a series of corruption scandals involving officials.

"…His son, Kim Hong-gul, allegedly received money in March last year from Choi Kyu-sun, a lobbyist under arrest on bribery charges, the national Yonhap news agency and major newspapers said.

"…Choi allegedly bribed Hong-gul to help a lottery operator, Tiger Pools Korea, win a sports lottery license in early 2001, Yonhap said…"
