South Carolina Tribe Approved for High-Stakes Bingo22 April 2004SOUTH CAROLINA – As reported by the Charlotte Observer: "The Catawba Indian Nation could run high-tech, high-stakes bingo near Santee but could not offer video poker in York County under legislation proposed Wednesday in the S.C. Senate. "…The tribe wants to offer 'Class II' bingo off Interstate 95 near Santee. The game could be played 24 hours a day on machines linked electronically to other machines at bingo halls across the country. One round could take less than 10 seconds. "Proponents of the bill, which four state senators introduced Wednesday, say a new bingo hall could be a major boon for depressed Orangeburg and Clarendon counties. "…The $3 billion-a-year video poker industry left South Carolina in 2000 when courts upheld a ban on the machines. But last year, the Catawbas said state law would allow them to resurrect the game if officials blocked their Santee plans…" |
