South Carolina Gambling Debate Continues

SOUTH CAROLINA – As reported by the South Carolina State: "South Carolina killed video poker five years ago this week, but gambling is far from dead.

"Illegal gaming machines show up so often, for example, the state's largest religious denomination plans to help police by looking for the machines.

"Many residents say the state is better off without the 33,000 video poker machines whose jackpots and come-hither neon lights lured droves of players to wager $2.7 billion in 1999 alone.

"…Poker supporters say abolition did not work.

"…Since video poker was outlawed, SLED agents have seized as illegal 3,400 machines the gaming industry marketed as replacements.

"…S.C. prosecutors are routinely in court fighting more than 75 different video games that business operate but law enforcement believe to be illegal…"
