South Carolina Gambling Bill Held Up

COLUMBIA, South Carolina – As reported by the Myrtle Beach Sun News: "The minibottle referendum bill was held up this week by politics over the proposed Catawba Indian Nation bingo hall, but the bingo efforts may have backfired.

"By Thursday, supporters of ending the nation's last minibottle requirement said they think they have overcome the attempt to use the minibottle bill to sway support for the Catawba project.

"The Senate's bill setting a referendum on ending the minibottle requirement was before the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, but there were not enough votes to pass it.

"Either the House must pass the Senate bill or the Senate the House bill for the question to be on the ballot in November. If action isn't taken, the vote will be put off another two years to the next general election. Supporters are concerned because the session is drawing to a close.

"…The tribe has an agreement with the state that allows it to have two large bingo operations. One is in Rock Hill. Several years ago, the Catawbas tried to open their second operation in North Myrtle Beach…"
