South Carolina Casino-Boat Ordinance Scaled Back

GEORGETOWN, South Carolina – As reported by the Myrtle Beach Sun News: "An ordinance to regulate casino boats was scaled back Tuesday night by Georgetown County Council but still blocks the boats from docking near churches, day-care centers or schools.

"The Georgetown County Planning Commission suggested a 1,500-foot buffer zone between casino boats and nearby churches and schools.

"To keep the ordinance in line with restrictions placed on sexually oriented and nuisance businesses, council said the boats must stay 1,000 feet away from schools, churches and day-care centers.

"Under the proposed regulations, Wallace Cheves, president of Palmetto Princess LLC, will be barred from docking his casino boat at Voyager's View Marina and Capt. Dick's Marina in Murrells Inlet.

"…While Cheves said he wanted to run midnight cruises in Murrells Inlet, the ordinance prohibits him from operating from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m…"
