South Carolina bingo parlour moves forward

SOUTH CAROLINA -- As reported by the Beaufort Gazette: "The S.C. Education Lottery has put a dent into traditional bingo concessions, but the state's only federally recognized American Indian tribe, the Catawbas in York County, wants to re-enter the contest with a high-stakes parlor in Marion County.

"Two weeks ago the Marion County Council approved a plan to allow the 2,600-member Catawba Nation to open a high-stakes bingo hall in a $500 million, 249-acre Carolina Entertainment Complex that already has an amphitheater and would include an RV park, water park, hotel, equestrian arena and adult-living facility.

"The high-stakes bingo, which could be six $100,000 pots per week, likely would be the impetus to make the park successful. If successful, it would be a huge boon for the region's economy. Many people make the long drive from Marion to Myrtle Beach to work in Grand Strand resort businesses.

"...The Catawba Tribe has new leadership after elections last month that chose 39-year-old Donald Rodgers to replace 73-year-old Chief Gilbert Blue. The leadership still has negotiations to complete with developers of the entertainment complex and the S.C. Department of Revenue, but both seem promising economically for the tribe and the region..."
